The weighting reflects what independent safeguarding research consistently shows matters most — whether the platform can actually protect a child, and whether that protection holds up in the real world.
Protection Capability
45%Breadth and depth of what the platform can actually block: content categories, per-child profiles, safe-search enforcement, screen-time controls, malicious-domain and phishing protection.
Bypass Resistance
20%How well the platform holds up against consumer VPNs, encrypted DNS (DoH/DoT), alternative DNS servers, hotspot tethering and simple router-level workarounds.
Parent Usability
15%How easy it is for a non-technical adult to set up, adjust and audit — parent-app quality, onboarding, day-to-day admin, activity visibility.
Parent Experience
10%Ongoing quality: notifications, support responsiveness, documentation, changelog, community trust signals, whether the app is maintained.

How we apply this to each award
Each best-for award page uses this same six-pillar framework but up-weights the pillars most relevant to that audience. A teenagers' ranking, for example, weights Bypass Resistance more heavily; a foster carers' ranking prioritises per-child profiles and reporting.
